Digitising attendance monitoring through facial recognition
The Covid-19 pandemic has pushed all to adopt digital ways of living and working, and the functions at NSDC have been no exceptions. Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS)-based monitoring of candidate attendance became a challenge, pressing for a futuristic solution that avoids surface contact and infection as it would have been in the case of an AEBAS system.
NSDC introduced facial recognition technology as an alternative to AEBAS. This has been incorporated in the Training Centre self-assessment application to capture daily attendance of candidates.
How it works?
Single point of contact (SPOC) at a Training Centre (TC) logs into the TC self-assessment app to record attendance by clicking on a candidate’s photo as per the enrolment data on the Skill India Portal (SIP). The facial recognition technology verifies attendance by comparing the photo submissions on subsequent days with that shared the first time. This output is then sent to the SIP for updating candidate attendance. A TC can check attendance data on SIP. The app has been deployed successfully and attendance of approximately 1,5000 students is being captured regularly.

Another challenge - Recording attendance of candidates on the move
Monitoring the attendance of truck drivers, who transport liquid medical oxygen (LMO), became a challenge as they are constantly on the move. Considering that the target audience (truck drivers) could perform simple actions, NSDC conceptualised and integrated a mix of basic Short Messaging Service (SMS) and advanced (smartphone with internet) user interface into the VV app with support from service provider Senpiper Technologies India Pvt. Ltd., and the following innovative solution was executed.
OJT/practical training begins. Candidate is on the move
On-the-wheel daily attendance. Link gets triggered by TC SPOC through VV app. A candidate clicks on the link received on her mobile, which allows her to take her picture at the destination and submit
TC SPOC receives photo & geo tags as attendance from each candidate, which is uploaded on VV app
The solution has been implemented in LMO practical batches that started on 25 August 2021. The current adoption rate among TCs shows the ease of marking attendance on the move. Given its success in the LMO batch, the solution is now being extended to OJT in Covid-19 healthcare courses.
