In order to meaningfully employ the youth from displaced families in productive activities, GRAM TARANG submitted a proposal to Vedanta to implement a One Year Fully Residential Program to train some of the youth as machinists for employment at the Vedanta plant itself. This program was approved and the first batch of training of 36 youth was initiated at the Paralakhemundi campus of GRAM TARANG. The training, however, and was made more challenging due to some unforeseen problems like:
- Poor Attendance record due to the inability of the youth to concentrate in class as many of them were school dropouts
- Alcohol, Narcotics addiction of many of the trainees
- No basic orientation-etiquette, reading/writing skills.
