What is ‘Specified Skilled Worker’?

‘Specified Skilled Worker’ is a residency status introduced by the Government of Japan in April 2019, allowing aspiring Indian youth to work and reside in Japan. This status was created to address Japan's severe labor shortages by accepting foreign workers with specific skills and expertise. As of July 2022, Japan has signed Specified Skilled Worker Memorandums of Cooperation (MoC) with 15 countries, including India. The Memorandum of Cooperation between India and Japan for the implementation of ‘Specified Skilled Worker’ was signed in January 2021.

Target Segment

The ‘Specified Skilled Worker’ residency status is intended for foreign nationals who are 18 years old or above and possess a considerable degree of knowledge or experience in a specific sector. For more information on how to work as an SSW Click here.

Japanese language level required

Proficiency in the Japanese language is essential for daily life and workplace communication, confirmed through Japanese language exams. Individuals who have completed three years in the Technical Intern Training program are exempted from these exams. Period of stay

Currently, individuals can stay for a maximum of 5 years in total. Bringing family members along is not permitted.

Applicable specific sectors

An aspiring SSW candidate can join the SSW program through 12 sectors designated by the Government of Japan. These sectors include: Nursing care, Building cleaning management, Machine parts and tooling, Industrial machinery, Electric and electronics industries, Construction industry, Shipbuilding and ship machinery industry, Automobile repair and maintenance, Aviation industry, Accommodation industry, Agriculture, Fishery and aquaculture, Manufacture of food and beverages, and Food service industry. Skill standards required

Skill levels are assessed through sector-specific skill exams. Candidates who have completed three years of Technical Intern Training within the same sector are exempt from these exams. For additional details, please Click here.

SSW Test Information

Japanese language test for Basic Japanese (JFT-Basic)

JFT-Basic seeks to measure the level of Japanese language proficiency needed by foreign nationals about to reside in Japan mainly for work, to communicate in everyday life situations. It tests the Japanese language proficiency of a candidate across four sections: a) Script & vocabulary, b) Conversation & expression, c) Listening comprehension, and d) Reading comprehension.

*For all the SSW sectors, the candidate must either pass the N4 (or above) level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) or the A2 (or above) level of the Japan Foundation test for Basic Japanese (JFT-Basic).

Japanese Language Tests

For all the SSW sectors, the candidate must either pass the N4 (or above) level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) or the A2 (or above) level of the Japan Foundation test for Basic Japanese (JFT-Basic).

Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)

JLPT is a test held worldwide to evaluate and certify proficiency in Japanese language of non-native speakers. It covers Japanese language knowledge (both vocabulary and grammar), reading comprehension, and listening skills. JLPT is jointly conducted by The Japan Foundation (JF) and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES).

JLPT requirement for SSW: For any SSW sector, the candidate must pass N4 (or above) level.
